We had a lot of fun styling this beautiful home for this CTV Morning Live segment that we filmed with Terri Apostle! We chose to mix natural elements – greenery, berries, pinecones – with some sparkling metallics, warm plaids and a few splashes of red! This mixture is actually very simple and relaxed, but also refined and elegant – a combination of traditional themes and some modern glitz!
Holiday decorating doesn’t have to be a mammoth task; you don’t have to go overboard to get a festive feel and you don’t have to change the whole colour scheme of your home. These are our ideas for making your home feel warm, welcoming and Christmassy…
The Tree: A twinkling tree is always at the heart of any Christmas decorating! Our tree has a pool of dark red velvet at the base, some pretty lights and a sprinkling of gold, bronze, silvery and red ornaments. Because our theme is about simplicity and elegance, we kept the decorations light on the tree – we wanted the décor to feel spread across the space rather than concentrated in one spot.
The Mantle and Hearth: The fireplace is the heart of the space, so we wanted to make a feature of it. Instead of traditional garland, we laid cedar boughs along the mantle and tucked in some red berries and some beautiful glass ornaments in shades of gold, bronze and deep cranberry red. We also de-cluttered the shelving and added a little glitter with two stunning gold glass apples – repeating an accessory like this really increases its impact.
On the hearth, we filled the big driftwood vase with fir branches and few red berries again – so simple and natural. We also placed pillows along the length of the deep hearth under the television, to provide some extra seating and cozy softness.
The Cushions and Throws: We mixed a muted green plaid with deep cranberry velvet, soft green, creamy whites, faux furs and of course, a little sparkle! Adding some extra softness is luxurious, inviting and cozy – perfect for visiting with friends and family – or curling up beside the fire!
The Table Tops: Simple mixed pine arrangements add splashes of green to gorgeous metallic and glass accessories. Bowls of pinecones and glass ornaments are another easy way to pull through a colour scheme and add festive touches to table tops throughout the space.
The Kitchen: It would be a shame to adorn the rest of the space and have nothing in the kitchen, so we tucked a few bits of greenery here and there – nothing that will get in the way of all the holiday cooking!
The Dining Room: The wreath on the door is so welcoming and Christmassy – it has the pinecones and berries again and gives the room a cozy feel. We placed a large floor vase with some evergreen sprays in a blank spot beside the door too – it all helps to create a stylish and festive space.
The Dining Table: We left this gorgeous raw edge table uncovered to display the beautiful colours and warmth of the wood. It pairs perfectly with the blue-green dishes and navy plaid napkins. Plaid is a holiday staple, but it needn’t always be garish or country! The navy, gold and merlot pattern we chose mixes perfectly with the greens, the punch of red in the cardinals and the silvery sparkling accents. If we didn’t love this table so much we would have added a runner or tablecloth in this fabric too! We also chose to keep the centrepiece low so that guests can hold conversations over it rather than around it and it doesn’t take up too much room on the table.
The Bar: If you have a bar, sideboard, buffet or bar cart, then you have the opportunity to get out your fancy bottles, decanters and glassware and serve up in style! When you are hosting, it’s great to put out a pitcher of mulled cider or punch and some tasty nibbles for guests to enjoy before dinner. Again, we used mixed metallics and beautiful glassware paired with some natural wood and greenery – plus that all important splash of red!
