Finding Your Design Inspiration

When you are re-decorating or refreshing your room or your home, there is always a starting point; something that inspires you. It provides the springboard to begin your design and a point of reference along the way. Generally your inspiration will be either one of the following or a combination:

  1. An aspiration: Your wishes and dreams! This is often a picture from a magazine, catalogue or website, a photo from your travels, a picture from Pinterest or Houzz or a phrase or description that you love and aspire to. The room or space described or in your image resonates with you and you’d like to re-create that look or feel.
  2. A spark: What ignites your interest? This could be a piece of art, a favourite cushion, a paint colour or fabric swatch, an object from your travels, or even the design on a tissue box! Its the colour or pattern or texture of the piece that provides a catalyst for your design; a spark from which to grow and develop your space.
  3. An objective: Practical and problem solving. Your inspiration could be a specific purpose or goal – you need a mudroom for three boys and a dog, a sunroom for relaxing and reading, a home office with storage or a formal dining room to impress your mother-in-law! This goal guides the design to fulfil your objective.
